How to clean your washing machine

Since a washing machine does what it says on the tin, you might be wondering how it gets dirty. But where does all that dirt from your clothes go?

The cleaner your washing machine, the cleaner and fresher your clothes are after every wash! Cleaning your washing machine regularly also ensures it works efficiently and effectively, preventing build-up of limescale, mould and detergent.

Home Emergency Assist understand that the cleanliness of your washing machine is not the only reason for an emergency breakdown. Whilst home appliance cover and insurance, including washing machine cover, ensures you are completely covered, we recommend giving your washing machine some TLC every now and again.

How often should you clean your washing machine?

We recommend that you clean your washing machine approximately once every couple of months. However, if you notice that your washing machine is smelling unpleasant in the meantime, it needs an immediate clean. If your washing machine is susceptible to build-up, we would advise cleaning your washing machine on a regular schedule to keep it in tip-top condition.

The Cleaning Process

We always recommend looking at your washing machine manufacturer’s instructions prior to cleaning your washing machine, just in case there are any specific requirements. Here are our top tips for how to clean your washing machine:

  1. Open the detergent drawer and place 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda.

  2. Add 120ml of white vinegar into the drum.

  3. Run a hot wash on your washing machine. Remember to check back on your washing machine every so often due to the build up of suds.

  4. Remember to clean out your filter, as clogged up filters are often responsible for washing machine breakdowns! For this step, please remember to adhere to manufacturer’s instructions as it will vary with different washing machines.

  5. Don’t forget to clean your removable soap and fabric softener dispenser. Dispensers are an area where mould loves to grow! Wash your dispenser in the top of your dishwasher or in hot water with plenty of soap, letting it air dry in the sun.
