Electrical Fire Safety Week 2023

Kitchen appliances have made our lives much easier, but it is important to remember that they can also be dangerous. Electrical safety is of the utmost importance when using kitchen appliances, as they are often powered by electricity and are in close proximity to water sources.

According to the Home Office, the biggest cause of accidental home fires is cooking appliances. Their research showed that around 15,702 fires were caused by cooking appliances such as grills, ovens and deep-fat fryers.

Here are some tips for electrical safety when using kitchen appliances in your home:

  1. Keep appliances away from water sources: Water and electricity do not mix well, so it is important to keep appliances away from sinks, wet countertops, and other sources of water. If an appliance does get wet, unplug it immediately and do not use it until it is completely dry.

  2. Use appliances according to their instructions: It may seem like common sense, but it is important to read and follow the instructions for each appliance carefully. This will help you understand how to use the appliance safely and prevent accidents from happening.

  3. Do not overload electrical outlets: Overloading electrical outlets can cause them to overheat and start a fire. Make sure that you only plug in one appliance per outlet and never use extension cords or power strips with kitchen appliances.

  4. Regularly check for damage: Check your appliances regularly for any signs of damage, such as frayed cords or cracked plugs. If you find any damage, do not use the appliance until it has been repaired or replaced.

  5. Keep appliances clean: Keeping your appliances clean will not only help them function properly, but it can also prevent electrical hazards. Dirt and grime can interfere with the electrical components of an appliance and cause it to malfunction.

  6. Unplug appliances when not in use: When you are finished using an appliance, make sure to unplug it. This will prevent it from using unnecessary energy and also prevent any accidents from happening while you are away.
