How Do I Change A Light Bulb?

We know it seems like an easy job but if you’ve just moved into your first home and aren’t sure how to do it, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide.

Please note, we can only give you basic advice on this page to do the job yourself. Make sure you use the right tools and protective equipment to avoid hurting yourself or damaging your home.

Simply follow these easy steps:

  • Turn off the power: the safest way to do this is to switch off the large red power button on your fuse box.
  • Let it cool: allow the bulb to cool before touching it – if it’s been on,  it’ll be hot!
  • Use a ladder: make sure you can safely reach the bulb
  • Remove the bulb: take the bulb out of the socket. The way you do this will depend on the type of bulb you have:
Bayonet Mount: grasp the bulb lightly (but firmly) and push upwards gently. Turn it anticlockwise until it releases from the socket
Screw Fitting: keep gently twisting the bulb anticlockwise until the bulb releases from the socket
  • Replace the bulb: insert your bulb lightly but firmly. Depending on the type of fitting you have, turn it clockwise until it locks into place or keep gently twisting it clockwise until it won’t go any further
  • Turn the power back on: once you’re happy the bulb is in place, turn the power back on and switch on the light
  • Dispose of the old bulb: this needs to be thrown away safely as the glass is fragile and sharp. Use the packaging from the new bulb to wrap the old one for safe disposal

Things to remember

  • Safety’s crucial when working with electrics and wiring
  • Check the wattage on the old bulb and replace with a bulb of the same wattage
  • Dispose of the bulb away from children
  • Keep your fingers away from the exposed light socket
